Attention Hlokk

Hey Matt, seeing as you love this sort of stuff, my Torsa 20 holds a full 300m of PE8, how much PE4 or 5 will it hold. I'm looking for 600m. Sorry but don't have the mm/metres, only lb/M.
Cheers
Tim

Beaten by Jamie, but sounds

Beaten by Jamie, but sounds about right. The nice thing of PE numbers is that because they are related to the area (or breaking strain for a given strength) not the diameter, its just simple fractions.

E.g. it'll hold twice as much PE4 as it did PE8 (600m). Or 8/5ths as much PE5 (480m).

Though, it does depend just how accurate those PE numbers are, and unfortunately, its not perfectly accurate. E.g. "PE4" in one brand may be PE3 in another and PE5 in another. So if two different brands, you may have some differences. Millimeter ratings are not great if they're not accurate either, particularly when they are blatantly wayyyyyy off (*cough* whiplash *cough*). Though you could look here (not that i quite agree with the methods of providing average diameter, but its close enough).

So in general, it depends what brand, how much backing you have, etc, etc, etc. I have a little calculator at home that will give me more info, but for now:

Should fit 600m, just dont use much backing and pack it tight.

hlokk, Not sure if i miss

hlokk, Not sure if i miss read your post, But a PE # is the measured diameter of the line not the breaking strength.

A PE#4 line  in one brand should be the same  diamater as a PE#4 line in another brand, Altho these can be different strengths.

It's the diameter, correct.

It's the diameter, correct. Well, kinda, in that PE3 should always be 0.285mm. A given rating, say PE4 can break at a variety of strengths. They should be the same diameters, but well, they dont tend to be as accurate as they could be unfortunately...

But the rating is actually based on the area, not the diameter. So PE4 is twice as strong as PE2, but its not double the diameter. If I double the diameter of PE2, I will get PE8 line, as I get 4 times as much area (as its twice as thick side to side and back to front, so 2x2). So PE8 has 4 times the area of PE2, and generally 4 times the strength (as long as both lines are the same strength per square mm).

Buuuuuuut, it could be possible that one brand of line has say the PE4 a little stronger per area than the PE8 say, or vice versa. So one line might have twice as much fibres, but those fibres might be a little weaker, a little stronger. Or more likely, the PE ratings werent quite expect (unfortunately).
