Things you need

Wed, 2009-06-24 18:24

Firstly, you need money! Then you need an idea about what your main priorities are in the type of fish you want to go for bearing in mind that if you don't have a boat then you most prolly will not catch Dhuies. Use one of our sponsor shops as a base for info as they are proven genuinely into it and great fishermen.. Just be careful to give them time to sell while thay are at work LOL.

I think we have mentioned this before in several conversations that all or most of the above can be caught on very simple small gangs with blue bait or similar using very inexpensive gangs (even more so if you make them youself). The rigs are simple also.

In my younger days I bought fishing books and they had so many hand drawn rigs etc it was incedible. Maybe you should consider buying one or two.

Just get out there mate and get into them!

In my tacklebox

I am no purist but I can catch fish. As I said before, keep it simple and talk to the tackle shop guys. Read your books and look at the size of the mouths of the fish and read up on feeding habbits. That will help heaps. Burley up a lot and even the wrong sized hooks will provide results.

Tailor - The most commonly used rig would be a set of 3 or 4 ganged hooks of 3/0 to 5/0 in size. Around Perth you would most likely use three 4/0 hooks. It really depends on the size of the bait you are using. Popular hook styles are Mustad, Tarpon, Gamagatzu
Mulloway - You will also catch Mulloway on ganged hooks, but the most preffered set-up in snelled hooks from 4/0 up to 8/0.
Bream - Size 1/0 circle hooks work well. Though if the fish are small in the area you are fishing you can go down in size.
Flathead - Flathead have big mouths and will take just about anyyhting, but a 1/0 circle hook will woek well, although many people prefer a long shanked hook. A Mustad blood worem size 1/0 is a good choice for a long shanked hook.
Whiting - Long shanked hooks are favoured with whiting. A Mustad blood worm size 12 is ok for small sand whiting. A good tip is to place a free running red bead on your line above the hook.
Herring - A size 12 long shanked hook will also work here. You can catch herring without bait if they are on the bite by sliding some gren tubing over the shank of the hook.
Tarwhine - The same as bream.

Try his book on fishing specific species. It does help the beginners (and not so).

I can recommend gamakatsu octopus circles as they are my favourite hook for just about every species including mulloway, strong and easy to snell with and not too thick gauge
