Faulkner Family - the guides
Faulkner Family - the guides on that rod are indeed supposed to be like that. It is intended for rods with overhead reels to prevent the rod wanting to twist when under heavy loads. It also does wonders to prevent the braid from wrapping around the tip of the rod while jigging

They have been around for a long time Russ. Commonly known as spiral wrapped guides or acid wrapped.
