Aluminium Boats and lead sinkers
Submitted by Northwest on Thu, 2011-02-10 07:49
I have been talking to a few people lately, about how bad lead sinkers are if they are in contact with your aluminium hull. Some people reckon it will eat your boat away with in 8 months others reckon it will take years.
I obviously try and avoid having sinkers, and other metals touching my hull, but I have a sinker stuck somewhere under a beam and its not going to be easy to take out.
Whats your opinion, how bad is it having lead in contact with aluminium?
Do you think a sacrificial anode will cancel the problem or only slow the galvanic corrosion?
Cheers

Good Question
I dont know alot about this stuff but as long as your normal Zinc anode is attached and working you should be alright.
Zinc will go first, then the magnesium which is in the aluminum to give it strength will go ( thats the pitting afect ) and lastly the lead.
Always give it a good wash as to remove as much salt as possiable.
Less likely if its a trailered boat over one that sits in the salt water all day.

i know
that ali boats dont like sinkers ....especially when shot from a slingshot......they do make a mess and people dont like holes.....but i also dont like assholes anchoring where im casting from shore in an empty river .....i was there 1st and the river was big enough for both of us..........these assholes just anchored up and cracked their beers , turned up the radio and didnt give a rats about me fishing........they didnt move after 10 mins but they did after it rained sinkers one at a time........makes a hell of a noise when wizzing past ya head and also when it goes through ya hull !!!!!
and before anyone says anything ....slingshots are legal in qld...........sold over the counter!!!!!

I have been watching this post with intrest as i have a older boat that is experiencing a lil corrosion and intrested in what other peoples opinions are.. When i bought my boat i found sinkers old hooks and allsorts of shit under the deck, so iv removed as much as i could and hoping that i have stoped (or helped) the problem. I HOPE.

Get that sinker out of there
Mate it might be hard to get to but it's pretty important you get that sinker out of there.
My last boat was a Stacer tinnie and a swivel found it's way under one of the ribs. I don't know how long it was under there. Anyway, it ended up eating a hole through the hull and I didn't realise until I got home one day and there was about 200 litres of water under the floor. That's a brass swivel but lead is just as bad, if not worse.
And Vander, come on mate, it might be legal to buy a shanghai but assault/wilful damage is still a crime.

Any metal on metal contact
Any metal on metal contact will cook with salwater introduced. I have seen ali and stainless go this way as I do a lot of repairs for offshore equipment. I usually rip out the decks after the season and give everything under the decks a major squirt with the pressure cleaner. Even leves left in the hull with a bit of water will eat your ali.
