4 Rescued north of Gnaraloo

Just spotted it on news that 4 people were rescued by chopper after their boat overturned off Cape Farquar north of Gnaraloo Bay. They were flown to Coral Bay nursing centre to get checked out.

Perhaps they thought someone would raise the alarm or it happened around dusk and they werent keen on swimming under the boat where it was dark.
Being wet for 17 hours wouldnt be fun. Lucky the cat is more stable upside down and they would have been able to stay partially out of the water.

Perhaps, but then it brings up the question of how is everyone set up with their life jackets and epirbs. Everyone nowdays has access to inflatable life jackets but from what I see at the ramp not many peeps use them. One can also carry the epirb on them in a small backpack, but I would imagine that's failry rare, we don't have all the facts it but it may have resulted in much less time in the water in this instance. How's everyone here set up? Inflatable life jackets? Epirb on yourself or mounted in the boat?

Pretty sure I read somewhere that personal locater beacons will be mandatory in time to come, would eliminate this kind of situation. Mate of mine races in the Ledge to lancelin every year and that's a minimum part of their safety equipment.

Life Cell
I've set my EPIRB, flares etc up in a Life Cell. Tethered to the boat so as it floats up it's still attached to the boat is she ever rolls or submerges.
WA based manufacturer and supplier of premium leadhead jigs, fligs, bucktail jigs, 'bulletproof' soft plastic jig heads and XOS bullet jig heads.

Very interested to read what
Very interested to read what happened here, and what sort of Cat it was. Anyone know what the make/model of Cat was ?
I was keen to move from a mono to a Cat but have largely shelved the idea as everyone I speak to says they have handling quirks that mean you must make constant ajustments i.e. Drive the boat not just point and go like a mono.

Have towed quite a few in over the years in my time with sea rescue, not just a following sea but also on a front quarter with one hull digging in and cartwheeling over.
I have been for a ride on a lot of them and there is no way I would buy one.

IMHO cats walk all over a mono for the ride. Being a greedy bastard I've got two cats these days.......:D. The big one a Bruce Harris Sharkcat flybridge ( We like to call it the magic carpet ) is 28 feet and doesn't give a shit which way it's pointed or how fast it's going, how it's trimmed or where the seas are coming from. The only time it gets uncomfortable is when it's resting beam on on a big swell. Drive it to the conditions, don't be a nong behind the wheel and you'll always come home in one piece. The lil one is a Markham Whaler a shade over 5m. She's currently in the shed stripped back to a bare hull awaiting a full rebuild into inshore and creek boat. Rear console with a uuuge casting deck up the front with a Zook 140 going on the back. Should go well.
Once you've had a cat you never go back.
My wife understands why I clean my rods n reels in the shower....

One thing I was told many years ago with cats is when you have a following sea that's a bit sketchy trail a good length of rope out the back on one corner . Meant to help with the stability side of things. Don't know how true it is as I have never seen it done

I was talking to a mate a few days ago about this and he said he went to a property around lakes road north of mandurah with his son to buy some ducks. He said there was four cats at the property. He asked the property owner why so many cats and he said they were all ones that had capsized and he had bought them to repair and sell. I assume they would be bought off insurance companies.He said he makes good money doing this. Somebody here might know more about this.
I went out in a Kevlar cat in coral bay recently. Awesome ride while travelling but a bit disconcerting when coming home with the sea breeze and a few times it would go on it's side a bit and carry on like this for up to maybe 50m

Cats need beam to hit the
Cats need beam to hit the advantages of the design but when you have to comply with width restrictions on the road, you end up with a narrow boat with potentially a high centre of gravity which doesnt help with the surface isnt smooth
No questions that a bigger cat is the most stable platform and not doubting their ability to go like a cut snake when compared to a monohull but i just question their stability when in the 5-7m trailerable size range

My neighbour has just gone from a 7.5m wa built Ali mono hull to a 8m cat,most of his miles are in the southern ocean and reckons the cat handles like a shopping trolley with a shot wheel
