Jigging Samsonfish Video
Submitted by Adam Gallash on Thu, 2006-12-14 16:38
There was so much footage from Jigging on Tuesday I had trouble making up a video. In the end I thought this little section was worthy of being put up on the site, sure with some more time I'll make up another couple. Hope you enjoy it, sure we will be seeing plenty more big jigged up samsonfish over the coming months!

shoulder surgery on the cards Adam???
Looks like that horse gave you some curry, saw a few flexes of the left shoulder there. Hmmmm, how are you going to subdue that big 20kg plus Dhuie on Sunday?
Cheers

Yep
Unfortunately we missed the part where he really gave me stick, that was after his 3rd/4th run and was worn out, and me too for that matter. The physio will fix me tomorrow, I'm not too phased about fishing too hard Sunday, I'm gonna be the camera/vid cam man.

Stretches
Yep, do some stretches as the ol body aches a bit the next day. :) If your not getting any, change your technique and be ready for them hitting it when your dropping down!!

Killer Adam
Thanks for showing a little more of the jigging styles Adam. Really great video!
Do you just pull up a certain distance off the bottom and then drop again or pull all the way up before dropping once more?
What size jig and what type of hook were you using? Treble on the bottom or assist hooks?
What was the water depth? Much structure? At a drop-off?

Gday Kawika. We normaly
Gday Kawika. We normaly check the sounder to show how far of the bottem the fish are holding at. Then you pretty much drop to the bottem then jig up as far as the sounder says they are. But thats not to say they wont hit it near the surface either its just that you want to keep it in the obvious strike zone. But as you saw in the vidio you have to be ready at all times as they were grabbing my jig on the way back down sometimes wich can catch you off gaurd a bit. We were in 110m of water so thats one of the reasons we dont pull it all the way to the surface each time. As for jigs the other guys could help you with that one as Im not the Guru on jig styles or types. Hope that helps a bit. Happy Jigging.

Hey Kawika
Tapouts answered most of the questions, but heres a bit more info.
We were using 300g jigs, a mix of sea rocks and SW jigs. I use assist hooks on the bottom of my jigs rather than just the top hook, I even dress the bottom hook up with a little skirt. (just my personal pref) Most of the hookups from Tuesday were on the bottom assist hook, we almost straighted one and had one snap. I crush the barbs on my hooks as well.
If there is no hookup within 40 odd meters of the bottom then I drop back down. The sambos haven't started fully schooling up - having said that, they were still there in good numbers, but not every drop was a hookup, which will probably change when they get into full aggregation mode. The structure is a bunch of shipping containers and barges which have broken up on the bottom which you lose a few jigs too but most of the time if you can turn their heads straight up then its not so much of a problem. But, as you see with the big guys, thats not always an easy prospect.
I will get onto editing up the next video so you can see more of the action.
Cheers,
Adam

T-curve
Ian Miller T-curve 200 24kg spin stick. Seems to handle the big fish well enough for my liking, can't bring myself to spent excessive amounts on jigging stuff when I like so many different types of fishing that require different outfits. I just love how it loads in half and takes some punishment, its why I recommend them.

T-Curve
I used a T-Curve 400 OH / Torium 30 on my last trip to the coral sea, and it was great value, especially around the coral shallows where I needed a bit of grunt.

Hey Shaun,
NOT bagging your Torium ,but a guy was out with us last week with a brand new Torium / 50lb braid, second sambo stripped the gears in it , went over to the 3 year old TORSA's and caught fish all day on them ;)
