Halco First Aid

Worth adding to your first aid kit - Emla Cream.

Available from the chemist.

If you are fishing remote (boat or bush), use of emla cream could help with the extraction of a hook from your body.  Yes, bourbon will help too, but the cream will help numb the skin layers.  It does take 30 minutes to work, so sit back and relax(probably a few more drinks) then remove the offending object.  Obviously, dress the wound properly afterwards and see a Dr for an update of tetanus shot.

Now if this bloke had some on his boat, it might have saved me driving him to Joondalup Health Campus (who by the way, did a great job removing the offending object) and we would have had more time to troll for spaniards!

Deep diving Halco introduced to anglers fore arm at high velocity;

Close up;

The how and why this happened, I will leave for the owner of the arm and lureEmbarassed

Another tip; maybe pack a razor in the kit too.  As if you have gorilla arms, pulling electrical tape off does hurtKiss

Cheers Pete

That looks painful.  One serious comment, if you do get jabbed, cut, etc, alcohol is NOT the way to go as it thins the blood therefore does not allow the wound to clot and therefore you keep bleeding.

It may help with the pain or take your mind off it but it will not help your well being.

not only it kills the bacteria but it also kills the good cells around the wound that is helping to kill the bacterias....so alcohol is a NO NO(saw this on documentary)

What not to do when using any diving lure from a boat : - keeping the boat moving while retrieving the lure to rid it of weed or reset teh spread is a big NO NO!!! The pressure on that bib is huge and one slip will see it leap out of the water at tremendous speed.
Looks like that is what may have happened here.Surprised
I always stop the boat before retrieving, either that or keep a very very close eye on the lure as it nears the boat and retreive very very slowly.

Mon, 2008-06-09 11:54

Gotta watch them Crazy Deeps. Absolutely deadly if you're not careful. And apparently drinking is bad for you regardless but I certainly do not heed that warning let alone in a boat with a treble in my armEmbarassed. Needed more tape though to cover the colour. Pink just doesnt match his skin toneKiss

Sooner or later!

Mon, 2008-06-09 14:38

Yes, fishing 3 times a week sooner or later catches up with me and the fish get their own backSurprised

The Crazy Deeps are a great lure and i do well on them up north and down here on YFT & mackies etc. They suck as far as there "out of the packet swim" and getting them to swim straight makes for a bit of fine tunning. I've had a few pop out but never an issue but this lure decided to taste my blood and got stuck in well.

I tried to push it through and there was too much depth so i tried to pull it out but it was in good. Had an extra bourbon and tried again but it wasn't gonna come out. I was spewing as i wanted to keep on fishing and agree with Pete about the emla cream which i'll be getting for my first aid kits in my boats.

Was funny when Pete tried to tell the Fully Qualified Doctor how to do his job ie How to get the treble out...... Sealed......he was told by the Doctor and also told to take a seat Tongue outLaughing

Mon, 2008-06-09 15:24

After seeing what can happen to one of the best fisho's out there, maybe its a good wake up call to all of us that this sort of thing can happen a lot eassier than we think.Surprised
Pays to take care and have a good first aid kit onboard just in case. Also crushed barbs make a lot of sense on any lure.

happens!

Mon, 2008-06-09 15:57

These things do happen for sure and considering how much fishing i've done and do every week it's very isolated. I do agree with taking care and i'll be seriously looking at droping the use of the Halco 190 XDD due to the frustrations of the lure not swiming and this has been an on going issue too. I rate Halco lures and they're a winner but the XDD suck for swiming straight and "out of the box". I'm looking at using the alternatives a bit more!

I dont crush barbs and i wont unless i think it necessary ie total C & R all day and in remote area's, you do lose fish and disagree with an article recently saying you wont!

I've got the First aid kits, just need the Emla cream now......Pete, please organise 2 lots for my kits....thanks mate!

Is that front treble in as well?

Certainly looks it ??

that must of hurt like mad once the adrenalin finished pumping , I like the Xraps for swimming straight , straight out of the box .

I got a couple of custom lures from US there suppose to go to 30 feet running PE5 at 6 knots , havn't given them a go yet , saving them for a trip to Jurien to use running along the outside of the reef .

Spot Mav, the alternatives i was talking about includes a lot more Rapal X-Raps and i'm  over making a lure swim.....tweek yes but not to what the XDD does!

It did hurt more when the local/bourbon/adrenalin eased......so i started drinking again....Laughing

Ryan have you tried the new classic bluewaters? They IMO are sweet and havent had to tune one yet. Both the 8 and 15 foot models have a nice tight roll action with heaps of vibration as well. The green dorado and pink chrome are a good choice for me.........

Keep it tight, reeeeeeel tight!

You would of pushed it in further ShagTongue out....that's why i didnt call ya for help!

Pete, i'm seeing "pear shape" for trying to find the Alma so "you da man", my bottle shop doesnt sell it he told meLaughing

Yeh Spess i have used them and agree they're a nice finished lure that swims straight & " out of the box". I'm using more deeper divers however and will stock/use more of other models in the future. I have hundreds of diving minnows and the 190 XDD is the issue. The other issue is that i've done well on them so it's hard to break away but to put up with the tuning sh!ts me and less time in the water which is a must down here for local spaniards especially with weed issues!

Corza, Honsu got 3 days off and he nailed a 5kg pinky off the ASI groyne late yesterday, i went down after work and was there till late and got zip.....he's a happy man!

crush the bloody barbs. Never again would I use barbed hooks. I recently had one in my foot and I am glad the barbs were crushed. It just adds to the challenge of landing a fish, oh carry some split ring pliers to so you can remove the lure, just a little bit more comfortable.

Whoa that looks nasty, had something very similar happen up a remote creek once with a Barra jabbing two hooks on a Scorp 150 into a mates leg (not my lure so there were barbs on it). Managed to extract the Barra with no further damage and old mate wasn't too keen on the 4-5 hour trip back to Karratha so I pulled out my split ring pliers and removed the hooks from the lure then used the old loop of line extraction method. It worked a treat and fixed him up with some betadine (external) and beer (internal) and we fished the next two days no probs. Oh and he crushed every barb he could find in his tackle box (even had to stop him at the bait hooks).

Cheers, Daisy

I have had to use the services of these clowns twice in the last 6 months to extract hooks.....

I had a nice pommy girl doctor give it a go to remove with the string trick ...didnt work ....almost dislocated my wrist though!!! and she then almost faint (yep a doctor almost fainted!!!) so she handed and handed over to another doctor.....he had a go with the string trick....again it would budge....and Im getting angry.....

In the end he cut it out....wish they did that when I first came in!!!!! not yank my arm off trying to pull the hook out.

Second time was like 3 months later......this time a doc got it out by pushing it through.....was in a meaty part of my hand so all sweet

Not happy when I got hooked in the calf some months later......buried a 5/0 almost upto the eye......decided the fishing was too good so did my own extraction......saved me 3 hours wait in hospital

Hi Ya,

Note to self - "Make sure there is a quality pair of side cutters in the fishing tackle box."

Certainly a timely warning.  Have not trolled much but have also never thought of the consequences of a lure jumping out of the water like that either.

My dopey son managed to get one hook of a ganged set through his index finger.  In one sie and out the other.  When he got back to camp he had blood dripping off the end of his finger.  When I asked why he didn't come back to camp with the hook in his finger so we could cut it off and remove it he said he had thought of it but didn't want to walk back to camp with a 4kg salmon hanging off his finger so he simply pulled it out - backwards.  He said the barb did have a large bit of meat on it.  Made me feel funny every time I thought about it for several days after (not faint funny, but just the thought of pulling a hook out like that)

Cheers.
