Weekend out on the tinny
Well, as some of you now know, I finally ended up getting a tinny (after a fair while of waiting).
Thar she is:
Well, as they say BOAT stands for Bring Out Another Thousand, and I've gone through that multiple times..... But at least I knew this coming in, and had planned for it. Especially all the 'optional' safety gear (EPIRB, VHF, offshore flares, sea rescue membership, backup battery). Anyways, constantly worry about money and you'll have no time for fun, so nevermind, off we go.
Woke up when still dark (and drizzly) on saturday and put the boat in the water. First time i've ever actually reversed a trailer but got it second go (albeit slowly).
Headed out to a snappery spot, but got there a little later than i'd have liked, and werent any fish there (except a wrasse that took a 7/0 circle).
Went to try some squid but friend was feeling a bit sea sick so had to head in. Dropped her back at home, then back to Hillarys for round 2:
No problems launching boat in water by myself, which was all good (again, hadnt dropped it in the water by myself before).
Headed out to a mates squid spot, but didnt have much luck. Tried some areas nearby and managed to get onto some good squid, so boat is now 'inked'.
Seems like a pretty good area and managed to land a few more squid including a beauty of about 25cm mantle length, and heavy as hell which i managed to snap some U/W shots of.
Picked up one or two more squid from the spot as well. Woulda got more squid if i'd been more attentive with the rods though (mucking around on the boat or the sounder/plotter). Looked up a few times to see both rods going off but too slow to get them before squid was off (might spool up one spool with mono perhaps...). Even had one jig come up with a squid tentacle chunk :p. Jigs were also weeding up a bit, so next time should get into a few more (as i get more organised with the boat.
Weather was nice, so decided to head outside the reefs. Picked a nice passage and headed out. Little bit of swell but no problems.
Managed to spot some nice ground on the way out though

Once out, I headed for the inside of the three mile to see if I could find some whiting ground. Went over a school of fish on the way around, scrolled back, pressed mark, then drove over them, were still on the sounder, so scrolled back. Ok, they're are bearing 170, 15m back, and 5m deep, so I cast a rig out, let it sink, then two cranks and I was on. Unfortunately was just a wrasse, but at least the humminbird gave me some practice in case its some proper fish next time.
Uploaded with ImageShack.us
Gave some areas a drift for more wrasse (marked on sounder as areas to avoid :p), and finally stumbled on some whiting ground. Got a few bites, but only managed one. No question I was on sand though. (not sure if that flare up is fish, or motor interference though)
Uploaded with ImageShack.us
Didnt have much time, so had to head back to the ramp. Chucked the tuna skirts out but no luck (was only 10 min to the passage though). Very easy to put the boat on the trailer which was good. Only need to pull boat between rails, throw rope over bollard, then on trailer, very easy to pull boat up by hand, and even easier to winch. If i put the trailer in enough, I dont even need to hit the rollers and the boat floats above the first one and the rails square it up . Supposed to be drive on too, but didnt have a need for it.
Got checked by fisheries at the ramp though, who wanted to see catch and RFBL. Unfortunately didnt have my skippers ticket on me (easy to forget when its paper and on a desk of papers :p) and didnt come up in the system (too new) and same with my boat/trailer transfer costs (but at least the boat was in my name on the system :p). Was all ok, but delayed me a bit. Did manage to make it to a friends house with 2 min to spare though. Then out in the evening for another fish on his boat, but this is about a tinny, so moving on.
Plan was to hit Woodies and try a KG spot someone had given me. All hopes of getting there early were sidetracked by sleep and stopping by oceanside, but got the boat on the water by 11 :p.
Headed out to a sand whiting spot someone had given me, but mostly turned up blowies and only one sandy, so decided to hit the KG spot. Water was crystal clear and could see the bottom no problems. Had the perfect wind to drift too, but several drifts didnt produce any KG's unfortunately. Got some small skippy and small pinkie though.
Now, where's his daddy
Wind started to pick up slightly, so decided to head back (considering i was almost all the way to rotto :p). Figured, why not head down on the outside of carnac/GI instead of inside straight back to the ramp and try some sand whiting spots. Wasnt a lot of wind, but wasnt glassy either. Boat seemed to travel pretty well at 18 knots so stuck with that (would go up to about 24, but bit bumpy and motor felt less laboured at 18).
Dropped down on a whiting spot i'd fished with a friend (who'd given me the mark) and had bites straight away. Couple of drifts and i'd gotten a pretty good back of sandies for dinner. I think I drifted for something like 1nm and was getting bites the whole way, so its certainly a good area.
After that, sun was close to the horizon, so headed back in. Wind was up a bit more and getting a bit of spray, but not really much of a problem. During a periodic check behind me, I noticed there were small breakers either side of where I came through. Thought that was a bit odd as the chart plotter said all good (but you can still get breaks where you dont suspect looking at a chart), but turned out it was still showing start position not boat position, der. Though, of course, I had planned my trip through the gap on the plotter, lined up a mark and used that for directions, watched the water first, and of course kept a full eye out the whole time (back, front, sides), checked the depth and was going faster than the swell, so wasnt relying on my plotter anyways. Good thing I knew to not rely on a chartplotter beforehand, some lessons are always best learnt beforehand. Though, the swell wasnt big enough to worry anyways, but just serves as a reminder thats its good to go over proper procedure in your head first before heading out (which I did :p).
Tried a few drifts for squid and picked one or two up but was a little slow. Still, I had a good number of whiting in the esky, and there was still 5-6 squid between the two days, so headed back in at dusk to turn this:
into this
Managed to cover a fair few miles on both trips and get a feel for the boat and what to do, where to put stuff, etc, as well as getting a good feed, so a sucessful weekend out. Next time, get some KG's or tailor at one of the reefs (but not doing the later by myself or while theres any swell around...)
Now, whens the next weather window
Lessons learnt:
The motor steers better without the muffs on...
Put sea sickness tablets in first aid kit for deckies
Connecting nav light leads to positive terminal in a wet boat sucks, install some switches.
Dont leave knife on baitboard if you want to keep it on the baitboard :p

That is mint! Must be over the moon! Won't be the last successful trip for ya no doubt
Love the quote:

I'm even more motivated to find myself a tinny and get amongst it.

Good story Matt
Your first few trips will allow you to get to know your boat, and believe me things still go wrong after 40 years of boating...![Wink Wink](/sites/all/modules/tinymce/tinymce/jscripts/tiny_mce/plugins/emotions/img/smiley-wink.gif)
Enjoy your boat and the freedom that goes with it.

Camera was a canon d10. Quite happy with it. Focuses quickly and well, very good low light performance (I took a heap of pics just using a dive torch or the flash at night once). Can also go down to 10m.

Just very basic: Flour, lots
Just very basic: Flour, lots of salt, lots of pepper (both freshly cracked). If you cant see the pepper, theres not enough. Shake before adding squid to mix. Butter and hot oil in pan til hot then cook til golden on both sides.
Been meaning to try Jamies suggestion of using potato flour, and someone elses suggestion of using sechuan peppercorns instead of regular pepper.

Szechuan pepper is great
Szechuan pepper is great stuff, its not really hot like chilli, or pepper for that matter, its also called pricky ash, and it does make your mouth and tounge feel prickly!
And numb, makes your mouth a little stoned, I think they say mala in szechuan itself.
If you buy some, crush it up and make sure you get rid of all the fine black seeds in it by sieving it otherwise your meal will be really gritty, you just need the husk.
If anyone is really brave, and would like to experiment with szechuan pepper go to Ryan's Restaurant in William Street in Northbridge, flick thru the menu still you see whats listed as a beef dish, served with tofu, chilli and szechuan pepper. The staff will warn you its hot, just say you don't care, and make it as hot as possible. Its really mapo tofu, which is usually made with pork. With that much chilli and szechuan pepper in it, it feels like really well spiced and delicious molten steel on rice.

Good read sounds like u had a ball. Still remember my first few trips out on my old tinny nothing beats a bucket load of sandies for dinner apart from filleting them. Got a few good spots for tinny fishing if u want some.

Yeah, a lot of work. I love
Yeah, a lot of work. I love boneless whiting fillets though, so usually take the time. Getting quicker at it at least. Sucks to have everything not finished til 11pm though :p.
Was going to scale and dehead them at sea, but my knife dropped off the bait board, and scaler bag didnt seem to work. Anyone know any tips? Maybe I put too many whiting in at once or not long enough or wrong speed?
Two awesome things i picked up for whiting (and squid) was a dehooker and a collapsable bucket. For the dehooker you just slide on line, lift up on dehooker, pull down on line and whiting flops off without having to touch it. Takes 2 seconds and no slimey hands. The bucket has a mesh top so you can drop the fish in, and some ice, then tip the water out without tipping the fish out later (or add water without the fish floating out).

Scaler Bag
Matt with the scaler bag put your whiting in the fine mesh bag then chuck it into the heavy mesh bag. Put it out far enough so its just in front of the wake, then get up to speed so its tumbling across the top (wont work if you just drag it). It only takes about 5 minutes to sacale em and it take the fins and gill covers off as well, i have chucked over 20 in at a time and its worked fine but it can be better to break it into 2 runs. Best investment ever, halves your processing time.

Write Up
Top write up Matt. I'm sure it'll take a little while to get used to the boat but you're well on the way by the look of it. Backing a trailor down to the water isn't the easiest thing to do the first time. My first attempt it took a couple more goes than two......
The best reason for doing what's right today is tomorrow.

Interesting tip Pete, will
Interesting tip Pete, will have to try it. If I'm doing a curry, i'll roast the crushed seeds (or powders or paste) on the pan, but didnt think of it for salt and pepper squid. I usually put just a small amount of oil and butter in the pan, but might try shallow frying next time. Havent really ever deep fried anything yet.
I want to try doing the squid slower cooked in a creamy lemon and pepper sauce soon though. Also want to try morrocan or cajun spicing in the salt and pepper for a bit of extra flavour. I think Jamie had a fair few recipes I'd like to try as well. Stuffed squid tubes I thought was one? Lots of things to try.
Got a 'dry' bag, but it got scratched and now isnt completely watertight :p. At the moment, most stuff goes in the hatch where its fairly dry. Flares in flare container, and rest of stuff (tools, emergency stuff, manuals, etc) in a plano sealed container. A proper dry bag is a good idea, but still figuring out where I want everything in the boat (then i'll be able to hide most of it all away). Thought whitworths were over easy/online only, but noticed they're in west leederville so may have to drop by before work some time.
Need to get a proper knife/tool holder, but just trying to find the right one. I do like having the knife on the baitboard. It has a recessed holder, but I really should take the baitboard off if its bumpy seas (whole bait board swivels around upsidedown :p)

Thanks for the comments
Thanks for the comments guys. I had written out the whole post before but pressed backspace outside the text and lost it all, so was umming and arring rewriting it all up.
Certainly lots of things to learn and improve on, but thats one of the things I like about fishing. I'm sure lots of you guys know what i'll be in for in terms of owning a boat too, hehe. But thats all part of it isnt it?
John, the Humminbird is great. Makes it really easy to find fish with the combination of the 2D sounder, SI, DI and the integrated chart plotter. I think its really allowed me to find ground and fish a LOT quicker than I would have with a regular unit. I can focus on driving, then if I noticed I drove over a lump a while ago, scroll back, mark it, then drive back to the exact spot (or something off to the side). Makes it really easy to hit the lumps quickly. I've set it up to even take screenshots so when I come back to a mark I can see what it was that I liked when I marked it. Either on the sounder for good/interesting ground, or on the chart plotter so I can easily see just what drift i was on at the time. Can view the screenshots on the computer too. Only need to press mark and its done all of that. Lots of options for icons too which is good.
The quickpress customisable buttons are really good too. Can have your 3 fav screens on display and can scroll through back or forward quick to get even better quick access. E.g. I have chart, full combo (2D,SI,DI) and full SI on the three buttons, but if i press the middle button then exit I get 2D/DI which is really useful for me (as you can see the bottom texture on DI). The 2D sounder seems to pick up stuff fairly well (I pulled up a bullseye and a tiny tiny pike from flare on the sounder, so it picks up small things, and i've seen whiting on Damo's sounder).
For pure 2D i'd probably go a Furuno, as they are still the best 2D sounder i've seen (wish humminbirds 2D was as good as theirs). However, for on a tinny, in terms of finding fish, and ease and speed of doing it, the humminbird is great, so very happy with it (and surprised how much more effective I am at finding fish and structure using it). The 2D and SI sounder work in very well with the GPS (e.g. scroll to a lump on the SI, then just drive to it, easy)
The screen also is nice and bright, even with polarised sunnies on (dims a little at some angles, but still really readable unlike some where I have to flick my glasses to see it). The quick connect is good too, no messing with 3-4 wires everytime you want to take it off the boat.

Indeed. Lets see some lazing
Indeed. Lets see some lazing underwater crocs and barra!
No 2D image of those 'whiting' to compare unfortunately (didnt screenshot 2D at that mark). I think its actually motor interference as I have the same problem as the other pic, and it only happens on the left side. I think it only happens at certain revs so in the baitball school I was at that speed the whole time, while in the 'whiting' shot i'd reved the engine through the interference range.
I do wonder if I can put a small sea anchor out off the nose (or tail of the boat) so when drifting the transducer is in the correct orientation to get SI working while drifting (it smears it a bit otherwise). Not sure if thats a good idea from a safety point of view or not?
Still fiddling with transducer position. Its roostertailing a lot. I mounted it higher, but now it doesnt give continuous bottom when on the plane, so may just mount it lower and put some sort of spray deflection on :p. Also need to shift motor back a little I think.

sounder
You will get a little interference on the port side if the tranny is on the starboard side (and vice versa). Its reflection off the motor leg. You could lift the leg (conditions allowing) and trial it as you drift.........
Was going to say thats very similar to the day I dropped you on the whitting off Quinds but you probably dont remember........
My sounder has a rooster tail but it doesn't affect the image unless at high speed. But thats turbulance from both the tranny and hull............never really going to remove that effect.
The tranny bracket should have come with a rubber plug that sits just up above the tranny itself below the pivot point. If you didn't get one there will be a noticable 'hole' in the tranny bracket at this point. This causes a rooster tail in itself.

Yeah, I remember seeing the whiting on the 2D screen (but not DI). May have to see if you had any different settings :p.
Yeah, the rooster tail is from it going through the hole on the bracket of the tranny. I think its more diverted water than turbulence itself.
Dont remember getting a plug though.....
May have to look again.

it's rather non-descript in size and apparent function.......
if you don't have go get it from the retailer. They basically gave me a complete tranny for free so I now have a spare.
can give you the part number (think I still have it)
I wouldn't relocate the transducer/tranny until you source the plug and install it. It cured my problems
