Trolling Question
Submitted by soupster51 on Wed, 2010-06-30 04:24
Lately I've been trolling two lines, one a high vis yellow mono and the other a clear mono. Both lines are attached to snap-swivels to which I normally attach about one metre of clear mono leader. The majority of the strikes have been on the clear mono. I've caught some fish on the yellow mono but no where near as many as the clear mono. As first glance you would assume the problem in the high vis line - What do you think? I'm thinking of changing to about five metre leader of clear mono to try and alleviate the problem - or is this a waste of time. Maybe the yellow line will catch heaps of fish next time out...... Scratching my head with this at the moment.

Im guessing its the line .I have noticed the same with the deep blue mono ,good exsample we went on a charter boat and took our own gear .The charter had the alvey reels full of blue mono .14 people on bourd 30 fish caught and we got 24 of them that was two of us.I still to this day recon it was the line putting the fish of..try the 5m leader and see if it makes a differance before changing.

Try swapping the lures
Try swapping the lures after every strike pretty easy if you're running snap swivels. If the fish then strike the same lure that eliminates your line or vice versa if they take the one on the clear mono the majority it may prove it.

All of my marlin fishing in
All of my marlin fishing in Exmouth was done with 3 combos- 2 had fluoro yellow mono and the other had clear mono. I would say the spread of hits was about even across the 3 but I did have 12' of wind on leader to a snap, then 6' of leader to my lure and they were skirted lures so there was probably minimal yellow line actually in the water.
Never really thought too much about mainline colour, maybe just whack a long wind on and go with that.

Yip
I agree with Lucky Tim. I am a lazy fisher and one of my riggs is a bottom bouncing/trolling combo with very high vis "braid". Not ideal for trolling but I have seen no difference in strikes by running a long wind on leader (which I use as a bit off a shock absorber). I havent noticed any more bust ups on the braid either interestingly!
I would try the long wind on for sure.

i run hi vis yellow and have
i run hi vis yellow and have no problems with it vs other colours. plus you can see your line better in the spread. as colt said swapping lures would be a good idea. if you look at a lot of game boats they run hi vis colours so cant be that bad?!?!

Port or Starboard
Both locally here and a recent trip to Shark Bay, I would say over 80% of our strikes came from the outfit in the Starboard rod holder. This has been with the same line, same lures.
Does the yellow line make a difference, I don't know, but my outfit always goes in the Starboard holder .........

I've been running the high vis line on the stbd side. No particular reason for that though.

I have noticed something similar with sides
Never been able to explain this, but I have wondered whether it has anything to do with the prop wash, and the spin of the propeller.
Just food for thought.

Hi-Jack
Dont want to hijack this thread but believe there is something about the starboard side for the majority of hits when trolling. Doesn't seem to matter whether trolling up or downwind most take the starboard lure...
I run a hi vis yellow braid on another reel, may swap things around on Sunday if the weather holds out and see if that affects things.

I've been trolling the clear mono on the port side and it has had about 12-15 strikes versus the high vis on the stbd getting about 7.

On the last day of the Exy
On the last day of the Exy trip we had 4 Marlin hits on the trolling gear, 2 were on Hi Vis orange/yellow Can't remember what the other line was. We did have long clear wind on leader on all rigs though.

Pattern emerging
I can see a pattern emerging. Looks like I'll be adding a 5 metre leader before Saturday.

More leader seems to be
More leader seems to be worth a try (doesn't have to be as thick as your bite leader). Not that I've done much trolling but I do like to run about 2m of leader min (personal preference I guess).
If you're running the same lures, maybe one is put a little further back and the fish prefer one position over the other?
Hopefully by deduction you'll be able to figure it out what's causing it (then catch 33% more fish :p)
