skippers rules regarding catch

just wondering what everyone else would do in this situation.

you take someone out in your boat , shared fuel costs.

you come home with one decent size fish in the esky caught by deckie.

do you share it or not?

Me, being the boat owner, I always go 50/50 in any catch, but if the spoils aren't enough for at least one decent meal for a family I will always insist that they take it home. I guess its a fine line when you don't have too much to split, but it's very easy when you catch your quota.

As skipper

I'd tell them to take it home and enjoy it. As deckie, I'd offer it to the skipper.

But thats just me....

Deckies get to keep their catch

Tue, 2010-04-06 16:45

Plus always get some of mine if I have outfished them.

I get to go fishing more than they do usually, so happy to top their share up.

I never ask for a share of a deckie's fish, but it doesn't mean to say I won't accept a fillet or two if I have caught absolutely nothing and they offer a bit of fresh fish.

It gets back to good manners and the offer of a fillet is all that it takes.

I think its imperative to set the ground rules first, I normally fish with the same person every time, but there has been instances when they could not get a trick all day, and I've done very well, that would make for a very hungry deckie with that attitude!! Needless to say, the same has happened to the skipper as well!!

When I take someone out, just because they chip in for fuel doesn't mean they are contributing to half of the trip expense, you might want to consider oil, launching fees, bait, boat insurance etc.... it's endless, but hey, I normally pick up all that!!  It generally costs the boat owner a whole lot more than just fuel!!!

depends, i always offer some fillets to take home if they bagged nothing but if i have lucked out and they want me to fillet their catch and there is enough for a few feeds i'd state my payment as a dinner of fish and they take the rest, if only one fish then it's a beer

50-50 all fish are shared

Tue, 2010-04-06 18:07

50-50 all fish are shared out evenly between all onboard some days the deckies will do well others they will get nothing, yesterday deckies payed 20 buck each for fuel and went home with a good mix of fillets i enjoy the company and its a good feeling to put others onto a good fish.

I would expect some offer of money for fuel. As for catch who knows, I never catch anything fishing, but crays normally get spread out evenly. Yesterday we only had 4 across 3 divers, so i got 2. Dismal day.

Fuel

Tue, 2010-04-06 18:17

It would depend on where you fish and obviously how big and thirsty your outboard is. I generally cover about 90kms in a days fishing for roughly 65 litres of premium burnt, at a cost of about $85-$90. Sometimes when the fish aren't being co-operative or I do the FADS or go deep I can travel anywhere up to 140kms for the day at a cost of $120-$130 in fuel.

If I was only messing about around the outer reefs I would not care at all if anybody contributed or not, maybe if they bought bait it would be a nice gesture, but travellling 100kms or more in a day is a different scenario.

me 50/50 on fuel and i got bait and all the rest ,i have the same decks most of the time, most of the time the fish is 50/50 but this depends on what we both would like i catch what he likes or vice a verca they get theres or mine fish ,some times i get all the fish and some times he gets all the fish

at the end of the day we are all happy and there is no issue with the costing of the day, this works the same on his boat

Usually go 50/50 with the fillets and the fuel costs.I leave the fish on ice overnight and fillet them up the following morning and divvy them up then.

Start with a full tank of fuel and fill it up on the way back from the ramp splitting cost between us.On big day round the islands may travel 80nm for around 50 litres depending on conditions.

Shared boat

Tue, 2010-04-06 21:39

This was years ago but a good story,

Myself and a friend (the skipper) headed down to Mandurah for a fish. On the way down we had to pick up a second deckie, his name was Glenn (nomie as in garden nome, if you are on here, Ha Ha). We stopped off on the side of the road in rocko and picked him up.

As soon as he got in the car, intro's were done and the very next thing he said was, and I quote, "hope you boys know I don't share my catch". Well me and the skipper both looked at each other and I reckon he was thinking what I was, Tosser.........

Anyhoooo we went out, this was when you could catch four Dhueys per person.

I caught 6 and the skipper caught 3, 9 dhueys averaging 13kg each ( boo hoo to those that think thats bad whinge somewhere else not interested). Well, nomie caught the biggest sgt. baker we had seen.

Anyway we did not share the catch and we have never seen him since. Shared catch is the way to go and if not it should be the skippers call.

Mates

Tue, 2010-04-06 23:54

If you are bringing someone on your boat that is not a mate then you have to get the rules straight beforehand. I have been fishing on my mates boat many times and he never askes for fuel - a lot of the time he even brings the bait. I'll always bring some lunch and brews and often the cook up is at my place anyway... been too long actually....lol

I would never expect him to split his catch with me but if I pulled up a good dhu or snapper there is no way I would take it home and eat it without the skip!

I rekon if you have to get out the calculator or start doing sums then you should be out on a charter, not fishing with your mates. All my mates know that if I have beer in the fridge then I'd happily share it and the same goes for anything I catch.

What is all the dhu/KG/herring/crays/crabs ect and beer you can drink if you have no one to share it with???

In my opinion the skip shouldn't have to ask a deckie for a fillet after taking them out, regardless of the costs involved, the deckie should be offering.....

as you can see here tho matt , most think fuel split is the way to go.

i didn't use to ask my mate for fuel , but was always a bit put out that he never offered.

I have always said to deckys

Wed, 2010-04-07 06:31

I have always said to deckys that all fish caught are mine and at the end of the day it is my decision how it is shared. Saves any arguments.

I usually only take enough fresh fish to last me to my next trip(enough for a couple of feeds as I fish at least once a week) and the rest is split between deckys.

I dont usually ask for fuel and bait money from deckies, but guys that give me money usually get asked a lot more to come fishing with me than those that don't.

My boat, because it has a few owners, is a little bit like communism. It's $10pp for the kitty, then split on fuel.

With crays, most people keep their own catch, but I don't like sending people home with nothing either, so a few pity crays get handed out too. Not sure I've been out crayed on my own boat yet :)

We very occasionally fish my boat, but usually split the catch.

As far as the catch goes i make sure the deckies always go home with a feed even if it leaves us with no fish as i am happy just to be out there and seeing others have a good time. i dont usually ask for a chip in for fuel but when it is offered i wont knock it back same goes for bait. the way i see it is that my wife and i always go out on the boat together and we were going to go anyway .usually the deckie offers to chip in then its up to the skipper to either take it or knock it back

take the whole fish, never take him out again for out fishing you and charge double next time...lol

no fish is his, but good manners says offer the skipper a fillet if it's nice sized fish, that way you get a invite again!

whats worse is when they winge and moan about fuel and bait cost when no one gets a fish, hell mate that grinds me.

yep same as most usually try for 50/50 unless there isnt enough to go round, then its offered to the deckie.

Always good to share with mates, and means everyone gets an invite out again.

We tend to fish in close

Wed, 2010-04-07 08:02

We tend to fish in close around Cockburn Sound with the kids.  Sometimes we have friends and family come out for the day with us too.  If we catch anything it is shared, and our guests always offer to bring bait and contribute to the fuel costs.

We feel that we were going out anyway so the cost of the fuel is not an issue it is our choice to own a boat and accept the costs that go with the ownership.

Most times we usually have a cook up either on the boat or at Garden Island and our guests share food and drinks for lunch.  Smile

share

Sat, 2010-04-10 16:48

Since I don't like to eat frozen, we only bring home what we are going to eat and we always share, no matter who catches it.  If we haven't caught enough to share I just give it to the deckie...don't want to bother cleaning fish unless enough for a couple of meals.

The rules are different if you bring your GPS along which happened to me....no fish and no repeat on heading out with me.   Ben

Ying and Yang

Sat, 2010-04-10 17:11

I'm happy to have mates jump on board and seeing we all swap boats/bait/tackle then I don't ask for any money or fillets.

At the end of the day that's what mates are for, having fun and taking the piss out of each other Tongue out.

If it's a new deckie then if they offer I consider but not really fussed as I was going out myself.

If they catch fish and I dont then so be it. If I catch more then 9/10 are returned; I take very little fish myself as I prefer to return them.

But Skippers boat = Skipper rules, and just be honest, fair and discuss the issue before you step aboard so one and all are educated.
