hey all,
kind of new to deep sea fishing and want to start jigging had a few sambos follow some smaller fish up to the boat, so dropped down a octo jig let it hit the bottom cranked it up about 10m and then let it sink again and followed that for a few mins with no luck so i decided to wind it in and as i retrieved it a sambo followed it all the way up and about 3m before the boat took off back down to the bottom, is there any tips you guys can give me, is the way i am doing it correct? are octo jigs any good for sambos?

Any old knife jig (long skinny jig) is the go for sambos. Flat out mechanically jigging is the best technique but if that's too hard for you just pump and wind as fast as you can. Throw in a couple of pauses every now and then and you can't go wrong.

Jugging? Is that what they do in NZ?
Octo jigs are for working slow near the bottom, so as seaquest said, a knife jig would work better (as they are more erratic for fast pelagic fish, and a larger target).
