Don't know much about the reels but I bought a Gillmaster rod off eBay for about $60. The blank was fine but the fittings were pretty cheap. Gave it away to someone for a pressy.
I went down to a undisclosed location tackle store and picked up one of these gillmaster reels in the game fishing size. It was a over head reel in around the same size as a tiagra30w. I pushed the lever drag to just past strike, but below full pressure and clamped my hand down onto the spool to see what the drag was like. As i wound the handle the spool jumped into life! To my amazment the shop owner laughed and said "You just broke that" I said well if my hand strength just broke it what in the hell would a 100kg marlin do to it, let alone a 200kg one? He replied "Na just joking thats the third one thats done it this week" I would get one if they were 50 bucks!LOL. Look flash but are nothing short of peices of shit!
Hey did you hear that i got picked up the other day by the cops! They booked me for having 2 guns in the car. I said, what guns? Them big boys conected to your sholders mate! He said.LOL.
yeah we had a gillmaster shop in mandurah, the rods n reels were pretty crappy the tackle was farly cheap. i shopped ther once brough a box of gangs and all the bottom hooks were coming off..... the store has shutdown and another company has taken over the shop... they didnt do very well.
I have a 30w for a "mates reel" on my boat as they are rough bastards and I dont like my good gear getting thrashed by my interstate family when they are over for a fish, I pulled down the reel( although never claiming to be a "reel expert".. meeh ) and all looked ok inside, stainless gears , reel is a few years old and has caught a small blue up at exxy ,so far so good and has served its purpose as intended ,but then again I dont spend more than $500 on my reels that I use as I cant see me tangling with 1000pnd marlin in my fishing out off the metro and the old penn senator and TLD 25 has never failed me on the yearly trip to The point.....each to thier own....cheers
"these reels offer an interesting set of problems. they appear reasonably well made on the outside. i will know more about the inside in a couple of weeks. they are dirt cheap! when they fail, you can be assured that your friends will ridicule you mercilessly. when you catch fish on them, these same friends will merely shake their heads in disgust"
Yeah they are still open went intoday they seem to sell a fair bit of stock... poor customers and dealers that dont no better. they just changed the name on the outside. i get my dvd's through ther because he can order any 1 i want and fairly cheap =). but ther gear aint that good nice on outside insides they lack quality

Reel expert!
The reel Expert is from California USA,
His quote on Gilmaster lever drags;
