Five Fathom Bank Dhu Fish

Went back to the spot we caught the two Dhuies on Wednesday night and pulled this 80cm one in (22lb on the Boga's).

How big do these things have to get before they acutally put up a fight??

Berlied hard and was hoping at the very least for some sharks but the current was running in the opposite direction to wind so we weren't fishing in our berly trail and didn't get any other takers.

This one was taken on a unweighted slimey mackeral drifted with the current.

not a bad looking dhuie .

not a bad looking dhuie . decent size for the shallow waters. seems to be lots of good fish in close lately. well done. as far as a fight goes maybe you have been lucky. when fishing deep they usually fight well for the first 20mtrs or so then you get the odd kick. you would know when you get a huge one on as they just want to go straight too the reef

This one was caught in 16m

Mon, 2010-07-19 11:57

This one was caught in 16m of water.

All of the ones I've caught didn't even register as a bite on my rod. I just decided to bring in the bait to see if there was any left and they'd be a Dhui on the end. I go to reel in the bait, feel like I'm caught on the bottom and give it a few hard pulls and then feel some weight and a couple of tugs and that's it.

Unlike snapper that go off like a rocket.

Nice Dark markings on that one

Mon, 2010-07-19 13:50

As Mentioned dhu's can be all different in regards to the fight they put up,i fish no heavier than pe3 so its usually fun. They are fairly slow sloggers but ive found some come off the bottom before they realize what's going on and by that time its too late.If they wake up real early in the piece they head straight for the hidey hole and it can be all over.

And let me guess, with all that fish in the freezer you would go and eat Chinese for dinner!!

Is was great to watch and certainly a Masterclass in patience and persistance.

Well done GP

Grooveepants, some do go hard

Mon, 2010-07-19 17:23

The last dhuie that I caught was of similar size to the one in your pic.  In 45m of water the better half called it fo a shark and I thought it was probably a sambo.  In the end I was lucky to get it as the 8/0 gamagatsu hook had opened right up, so yes some go hard.

Damn, well I can't wait to

Mon, 2010-07-19 18:04

Damn, well I can't wait to catch one that does go hard. As I said, this thing didn't even show as a bite on the rod. The rod was straight the whole time in the rod holder and I didn't even know it was on there until I started to reel in to check my bait. All of the Dhui's I've caught have been the same. I wonder if the thing has picked up the bait on the drift and taken it to a hole or something and is just sitting there munching on it and then I come along and give it a whack to get it free from what I think is the weed bed and it's hooked???

As mentioned on my other post, the 70cm fish from Wednesday night was caught on a kmart special with 13lb line and we thought it was a cuttlefish coming up as it was just a dead weight.

Nice fish Grooveepants

Its really good to see that you can still see dhuie's on the five fathom bank.

All we seem to get is wrass iv actually given up on it.

As you said you where burling up, are you on anchor? or are you drifting?

Last time we tried on anchor my partner got sick to quick so i gave up on that idea.

Glad your having luck and gives me hope as partner not always keen to venture deep.

Yeh I've been doing pretty well on FFB. I've caught one 74cm snapper, 5 Dhu Fish 50cm, 52cm, 60cm, 70cm, 80cm, a number of Sambos and some bronzies and hammer heads all in the space of 3 weeks. We've also caught a number of breaksea, harliquin, large skippy, scorpion fish and what looked to be nannagai or red snapper.

Haven't had any problems with wrasse, don't think I've even caught one in the last 2 weeks. I prefer the slimeys as they are large and tough and don't get picked to death like the mullies, though I still have a paternoster out with a mulie and squid on.

I've been finding my spots by drifting in different areas and keeping my eye on the sounder. I actually came across a beauty of a lump on Sunday whilst trying to do a drift in my burley trail which I will give a go next time I head out. But mostly once I find a lump I just anchor up and burley hard.

I'd actually like to thank you guys as it's the info in your posts that I've been using and putting into practice and so far it seems to be paying off.

He's Fishing Tonight

Thu, 2010-07-22 21:02

Will see if GP just has beginers luck or really knows what hes doing!!

Hes back out there tonight looking for that new lump we found on Sunday.

60, 70, 80cm..................i expect the next ones 90cm.

Would be interested to know the ratio of fillet to fish people get from Dhuies.

Sundays 10kg horse produced 3.5kg.

No luck last night. Caught a 45cm Dhui and a rather large Wobby.

Also lost my anchor. It was attached when I threw it over but wasn't when I brought it up. Any divers want to retrieve it for me Wink

i think that is a shame with fish , so much of it is, the head, bone and cartlige not alot of meat comes of a fish when you really take into perspective its size etc.  Great fish as i have said before .

I use the head and frame for fish soup, it's amazing how much meat comes out of the head of a jewie or pinkie. Add a few vegies and some chilli tastes great on a cold day and you can freeze the leftover soup.
